Alongside our criminal defense practice, O'Neill & Hassen offers specialized consulting services for individuals seeking post-conviction relief, and for attorneys seeking expert guidance on discovery management and legal technology.
A conviction is not always the final word. For clients who have been wrongly convicted — or whose sentence was unjustly imposed — we pursue every available avenue of post-conviction relief with the same intensity we bring to trial.
This includes direct appeals, federal habeas corpus petitions (28 U.S.C. § 2255 and § 2254), motions based on newly discovered evidence, Brady violations, ineffective assistance of counsel claims, and compassionate release or sentence modification requests.
We also have particular experience in New York state post-conviction work, including CPL § 440 motions in New York City and throughout New York State — a powerful but often underused avenue for challenging convictions based on newly discovered evidence, constitutional violations, or ineffective assistance. We work closely with Conviction Integrity Units, the specialized prosecutorial offices now operating in many New York counties that are dedicated to reviewing and correcting wrongful convictions. Navigating these units effectively requires understanding both their process and their priorities — experience we bring directly to our clients' cases.
Wrongful conviction work is some of the most important work we do. The people we help in this area have often already lost years of their lives. We take that seriously.
Modern federal litigation — particularly in drug conspiracy, RICO, and white collar cases — produces discovery sets that can run to millions of pages of documents, communications, and financial records. Managing that material effectively is not just an organizational challenge; it is a strategic one.
We consult with other law firms and solo practitioners on developing efficient, technology-driven systems for ingesting, organizing, searching, and analyzing large-scale discovery. Gráinne O'Neill's background in computer science and her years of experience as Legal Systems & Technology Director at the Orleans Public Defenders gives us a perspective that is both technically grounded and practically tested in high-stakes federal litigation.
From e-discovery platforms to case management workflows, document review tools to database solutions for tracking cases and clients — we help legal teams and public defender offices modernize their practice infrastructure.
This work draws directly on Gráinne's experience building and managing technology systems for a large public defender office, directing a national knowledge-management platform for public defenders at Harvard Law School, and her earlier career as a senior programmer and technical director. We understand both the technical landscape and the specific demands of criminal defense practice.
For attorneys handling complex federal matters who want a second perspective on case strategy, motion practice, or trial preparation, we offer consulting engagements. Our experience in the SDNY and EDNY — including two trial victories — gives us insight into federal practice that can be genuinely useful to colleagues navigating similar terrain.
These engagements can take the form of case reviews, strategy sessions, motion drafting assistance, or ongoing consultations throughout the life of a case. We approach this work as a collaboration between colleagues who share a commitment to excellent defense advocacy.
